Still under development!!!

July 17, 2009

I know we have not posted in awhile, but hobbyist game development is a lot of work and there has not been enough progress to show any new code, still working on the games framework. Not to mention with the release of Secret of Monkey Island and Tales of Monkey Island, I have found myself busy replaying these master pieces of a game!!!

Don’t worry thou, we are still together and have a few really cool things in the pipe. We are also finally starting R&D on the IPHONE platform as another means of distribution for our content.

We are still looking for volunteers who are interested in game development & design, so don’t hesitate to email me at chris@infectedbrains.com.

The Games of Our Lives

May 27, 2009

I grew up in that sweet spot of video game history where Atari’s run was coming to an end and Nintendo was just making ground. These systems still occupy a space in my home, along side other systems now laid to rest like Sega and SNES. And I still take the time out to boot up those old memories.

Today, I’d be considered a retro gamer. Maybe I’m just a nostalgic person who hangs on to the past, but I think part of the reason I still love these games so much is the fact that they managed to carve out a spot in my heart. These games grew up with me, and now Pac-Man and Mario are part of my family.

But what was so great about these games? Certainly, they were awesome at the time, but compared to today’s graphics and complexity you find in 360 and PS3, these games are primitive. They did the best that 8 bits would allow, but what these games also had going for them was that they were fresh and unique. They tapped into a market that had been so underdeveloped up till then. They had become innovators.

This is the sort of the philosophy that I have tried to take on as an artist – produce the best work I can and try to keep it fresh and entertaining. I try to create the molds that the rest are cast from. I don’t mean to sound as though I look at my skills as superior. I just aim high.

And this is what I hope to bring to Infected Brains and the games we bring to you. It’s all too often you see a lack of design concept in a game – just another cookie cutter product that leaves the industry a bit stale. You can expect us to bring something new, something maybe never seen before, and maybe… just maybe… our games will be the next ones your memories connect to.

Developer Dairy Progress Report

May 8, 2009

So I know I have been quiet for the past few weeks, there was some horrifying experiences in the past few weeks(my Xbox 360 died), but I was able to overcome that and continue development of our 1st game, I Eat Cars and have made some significant process as a first time game developer.

I have collision detection! Yes I know for anyone who knows how to actually develop this seems particularly basic but I do now have a car turning into a Mariachi Salsa Band!

Step 1: A Police car and regular Car in two unique locations.

Step 2: Collision Occurs and Car turns into a Pepper Mariachi Band

As you can see this is ridiculously simple, but has amounted to large amounts of code already!  So Progress is happening, alot of top secret stuff is going on and we are working hard every week and weekend when time permits. So stay tuned for more exciting news.

Introducing Will Shields, Creative Director

April 16, 2009

A lot of people already know me(Chris Taylor) through the crazy amount of soliciting I have been doing for Infected Brains via twitter, facebook and other mediums, but what they don’t know is that Infected Brains Studio is not 100% of my creation. The studio was actually founded together with Will Shields of ten12 designs.

Will Shields is an amazing artist and friend who I have known since I moved to Florida almost five years ago. We started working together as temps in a QA/Help Desk position after I graduated college. His creative prowess is unmatched as you can tell by some of his designs on ten-twelve.com. He brings an imaginative art style to the game creation process, not to mention a strong background in writing and will be contributing heavily to the games story and dialog.

I personally am looking forward to sharing this dream of mine with such an artistic and inspired individual, and both of us hope to bring you a unique and fun experience to your video game diet.

Also if you want to check out some excellent writing, check out Will’s Blog at http://www.ieatcars.com

Developer Diary #1 – Why I Play Games

April 7, 2009

So as part of the Infected Brains development process, I want to share with everyone the things we do here in the studio and working on the game. However being that this is very early in development cycle, there is not as many exciting things to share. So that being said I do want to talk about some of the things about games that have inspired me to start building one of my own with the help of my great team and friends.

Growing up I was definitely a child who was able to play alone, with my imagination as my guide with no need to have anyone there with me(I however was not a loner, just self-sufficient). I was able to use my imagination with bare necessities whether it be a pad and paper, with me drawing the battles of space out before me, or simply a few Lego dudes and some bricks of possibility. So all of this left me to always dream big, and escape away into my imagination, and very often my day dreams. However it wasn’t until video games, were the stuff of my dreams finally became an interactive reality, whether it be Super Mario Bro’s on the Nintendo or playing a swash-buckling pirate “Guybrush Threepwood” in Monkey Island on my cousins 286 PC.

I never held to one specific genre because my imagination was to active for such a narrow focus, I basically gobbled any game I could get my hands on. I played Space Flight Simulators to Tentacle inspired adventure games, from Tactical Shooters to Orc based Strategies games, there was no game I wouldn’t try. All the years of imagining and thoughts of being able to immerse myself in those worlds, finally came true when I started playing video games.

Those experiences defined who I was creatively and with time made my palette even more robust as I craved to expand my experiences. Whether it be to cover new and interesting viewpoints or simply work with a genre in which I was less exposed to.

These experiences haven’t just shaped me as an individual but also the relationships I had with real people. Growing up I would be hanging out with friends taking turns with the keyboard on who got to control the game, even thou it was only designed for the single player. Later with the advancement of broadband internet, I took those experiences of the computer room and was able to interact with friends no longer local to the area, in on-line gaming sessions which our collaborative effort brought us to a common goal, or in sometimes against each other(but never in friendship damaging way).

The experiences of games have always been positive for me, they never changed my life in anyway but for the better. It opened my understanding of the world and brought my imagination to a whole new level. I am excited for what has come before me and how that will impact the development of my own game. I hope to deliver the quality that I would expect from a game, but really just want something that can be enjoyed and remembered as an experience, whether it be getting two friends together for a few hours, or making that rainy day alone in the house, a little less lonely. I am hopeful for the future, and hope you come along for the ride.

Thanks for reading,
